Yuko Ishihara defends her PhD thesis

Early afternoon, monday 19th of December, Yuko Ishihara defended her PhD thesis on Transcendental Philosophy and its Transformations, subtitled Heidegger and Nishida's critical engagements with transcendental philosophy in the late 1920s. The thesis was published earlier this year, by the Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen.  

In her thesis Yuko Ishihara sets out to articulate the extent to which the two philosophers Heidegger and Nishida worked within a traditional transcendental framework, but also the ways in which they attempted to transform transcendental philosophy.

During the late 1920s, both philosophers looked to transcendental philosophy as a way to overcome the Western metaphysical tradition. Neither philosopher, however, simply accepted traditional forms of transcendental philosophy. With her thesis Yuko Ishihara brings Heidegger and Nishida into dialogue and addresses their critical engagement with transcendental philosophy.

The defence was moderated by Associate Professor Leo Catana (University of Copenhagen) The assessment committee for the defence consisted of Professor Dan Zahavi (Chairman at the university of Copenhagen ), Professor Bret W. Davis (Loyola University Maryland and Associate Professor Charlotta Weigelt (Söderstörn University).
