If we need social workers to better at understanding self-grooming as a problem then they certainly need more digital literacy. It is good to know about how computers work and how social media works. However, that is not enough. Knowing the concepts of social media and computer technology will be a prerequisite, but not an end to grasp the cultural landscape of the 21st Century. The social workers need to know more about fandom culture and geek culture as well. They should learn about trolling and internet memes. They should know about fantasy and science fiction themes and ideas. They should know about transmediality and fictional worlds in gaming. Otherwise, they do not know what is going on.
